Builders Continue to Adopt WorkChoices

Master Builders Australia is responding to builders’ strong interest in making WorkChoices effective in the building and construction industry. Mr Wilhelm Harnisch, Chief Executive of Master Builders said, "Master Builders is responding by providing more concise information about WorkChoices through the publication of more fact sheets that should assist with compliance." The latest fact sheets explain the application of the Australian Pay and Conditions Standard, which is the standard against which all WorkChoices agreements are measured, and the record keeping obligations under WorkChoices. The two new plain-English Fact Sheets are designed to increase and widen the understanding of builders about the practical effect of changes in the law, particularly the way in which a new floor has been placed under all new agreements and a large percentage of existing workplace agreements, including common law contracts. The total number of Fact Sheets issued by Master Builders to date is nine. Mr Harnisch said, "The two new Fact Sheets have been produced as a result of feedback from builders and others who have attended Master Builders seminars held throughout Australia which will continue until the end of June. "The way to comply with new record keeping and pay slip arrangements was clarified by the Commonwealth Government earlier this month. How to comply has been at the top of the list of further, simplified information asked for by builders. "The WorkChoices reforms are welcomed by builders because they provide broader workplace reform that enables the focus to be upon individual workplace industrial relations in a new regime where the rule of law is respected, something that has been largely absent from the commercial building industry. "Constitutional corporations can make new agreements now if they wish and this is something Master Builders encourages builders to do, agreements that are underpinned by the new Standard explained in Fact Sheet number 8. "Compliance obligations for record keeping and payslips are now clear and are explained in Fact Sheet 9."
