Send in Watchdog Against Crime

Australia’s peak building and construction body, Master Builders Australia, has today called on the Commonwealth Government to move against organised crime in the industry. Master Builders Australia CEO Wilhelm Harnisch said, “There has been recent evidence brought to light that the Mafia may have infiltrated building sites.” “We call on the Government to act and to act quickly to stop further infiltration from occurring.” “The jurisdiction of the Australian Building and Construction Commissioner, the industry watchdog, should be expanded to ensure that criminal elements in the industry are weeded out.” “We call on the Commonwealth Government to put the criminal community on notice by expanding the role of the Commissioner to cover crime relating to the building industry.” “The matter of criminal infiltration is separate to industrial action and the role of building unions. What Master Builders is concerned about refers to the criminal infiltration exposed in the press in 2006.” “We cannot have elements of organised crime as part of an industry that is helping to build this nation and provides rewarding careers for 900,000 people,” Mr Harnisch concluded.
