eTradesman NEWS - Dodgy Tradesmen Hotline

A NATIONAL hotline has been set up to dob in con artists who rip off consumers with dodgy home repair jobs. Victorian and NSW have joined forces to launch the new hotline to combat itinerant con men and gangs looking to rip off consumers with cheap and dodgy home repairs. The hotline, 1300 133 408, was launched by NSW fair trading minister Anthony Roberts and Victorian consumer affairs minister Michael O'Brien in Albury-Wodonga today. Mr Roberts said the new hotline will allow anyone across Australia to call up and report itinerant rip-offs. Fair trading agencies across the country receive hundreds of reports of travelling con men ripping off consumers with cheap and dodgy home repairs every year. Information from the hotline will be fed to a NSW fair trading taskforce involved in a new national strategy to targeting travelling con men. Mr Roberts said all Australian governments were supporting new initiatives to stamp out what for too long had been considered civil offences. Dodgy offers of home repairs may include when a trader knocks on your door uninvited, the quote for repair work is cheap, cash-only, today only and you are pressured to accept it immediately and the person demands payment before work has begun. Consumers are advised to shop around for quotes, check trade licenses and not hand over cash until satisfied the tradesperson has the skills to do the job properly.
